Support for Skin Cancer Sufferers

When things unexpectedly take a turn for the worse, sometimes that best medicine is having someone to talk to. A skin cancer diagnosis, even non-melanoma, can be a frightening thing. It’s even more frightening if you’ve been diagnosed with melanoma. Your health care provider may suggest that a few counseling sessions with a psychologist may be what you need to talk out your fears.

Advice for Skin Cancer Sufferers

But most will tell you that is not a relationship that will actually help you though this trauma. Sometimes the best advice comes not from the health care provider who just broke the news to you or the partner you share your life with. Sometimes the best advice comes from the people who have been there and understand your fears from the inside out.

Then the question becomes where do you find these people? There are always self-help groups, these are groups of people in like situations who will meet on a regular basis to offer each other support and a forum to discuss something that only those going through it could possibly understand.

A Study on Patients with Skin Cancer

A study was conducted of patients who had been diagnosed with melanoma. Patients were found to do better both emotionally and physically when they were part of a support group at the beginning of their treatment. The overall survival rate of people who were part of the group was three times that of patients who were not part of a group. The study looked at the patients six months after the groups ended and found that a whopping sixty six percent had an increase of at least twenty five percent in their cancer fighting cells. Nothing like this was found in the group who had not been part of a support group.

For those who want to be able to talk to others with the same problems but prefer some anonymity there are at least two options open to them.

Help Line for Skin Cancer

One is using a helpline. Most major cities, and many smaller ones, will have help lines where you can exchange ideas and discuss your fears with people who man these because they want to help. Many of them will have been through similar experiences, but some will be people who have not but nonetheless are there to help. This is an okay alternative but may not get you the regular contact with a fellow sufferer that you really crave.

Chat Rooms in the Internet

Lastly, there are chat rooms you can go to on the Internet. These are a good alternative for those people who want to stay at home but really prefer to talk to people in the same situation they find themselves in. There are many such chat rooms on the net and if one doesn’t suit you another surely will. You’ll find them worldwide as well, which gives the patient an opportunity to see what treatments are available other places or at least what methods other physicians may use. But be careful, don’t try to follow someone else’s treatment plan; each person’s different.
