If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer you may be wondering what treatment you will receive. Even if you have already had your treatment options explained to you in detail by your doctor, you may still feel lost due to the inability to absorb all the technical and medical terminology that was used. Description of Some Skin Cancer Treatments

Below there is a brief description of some of the treatments that may be used to treat skin cancer.

The type of treatment you will receive will rely upon a variety of different things which include your age and whether or not the cancer has spread to other parts of your body. Surgery Treatment for Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer Treatment may consist of surgery. Your surgeon may decide to remove the cancer itself and also some of the surrounding skin. The amount of normal skin removed will depend on the specific type of cancer found and how deep it is. Usually an area of about one to two centimetres of surrounding skin is removed.

Some types of skin cancers can be removed by freezing using a substance called liquid nitrogen. Other methods include removal by techniques and drugs such as imiquimod.

Need of an Extensive Surgery

A more extensive type of surgery may be necessary if a sentinel node shows cancer cells following a biopsy of a suspect area. This technique removes lymph nodes near the cancer along including affected skin. Surgery is often followed by a course of radiotherapy.

You may also need to undergo a course of treatment using interferon alfa 2b following surgery especially if there is a strong probability the cancer will return. You may also be given Interferon alfa 2b which is a form of immunotherapy treatment given to help your immune system fight the cancer.

Skin Cancer Treatment - Immunotherapy Cancer Vacation

Another recent development for skin cancer treatment is immunotherapy cancer vaccination although the research into this is still undergoing and is not yet widely available. You may be given chemotherapy if the cancer has spread to other areas.

Skin Cancer Treatment Preventive Measures

Although there is no definite prevention of skin cancer, there are a number of things one can do to reduce their chance of developing the disease. The most important yet often ignored is minimisation of the skin’s exposure to the sun.

 Everyone, no matter what colour or type of skin they have (\although the fairer skinned ones should use extra caution) should use a sunscreen that is protective with a protection factor of at least 15. They should also wear protective clothing and remain in the shade as much as possible, especially during the hours of 11am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are stronger. It is always advisable not to use sun beds and sunlamps as these too have harmful rays.
